Today is the 25th anniversary of the tragic death of Selena Quintanilla and still after all that time, the love and admiration of the people for the singer is still intact. Today, beloved Selena continues to be one of the most remembered Latino artists and also one of the most imitated. And it is that the original style of the Texan singer is still in force and continues to be inspiration for other artists and even for new generations.
Úrsula Carranza, our fashion and beauty director, spoke with Suzette Quintanilla, sister of the late singer, about her legacy, her incomparable style and the new makeup collection for MAC inspired by her, which will be launched this April.
Selena is a fashion and beauty icon for many, even twenty-five years after her departure. How would you define her style?
I feel like my sister's style is timeless. She knew how to keep her look really simple and not overload it with jewelry or prints. I know that her intention was not to try to create a timeless [concrete] style, it came naturally to her because of her passion for fashion.

After the tremendous success of your sister-inspired MAC makeup collection, the second chapter will be released soon. How was that experience?
The first collection was about trying to finish what my sister had started before her death. I was working on a [makeup] line, looking for colors and swatches from various companies, and trying to see which ones were the best. The first collaboration meant a lot to me on a personal level, I made the decisions that I thought she would have made. Like not putting her image everywhere on the packaging, she would never have done that.

How is this new collection different?
The new line is a celebration of the incredible legacy he left us. When I was thinking about the concept, I had Selena fans in mind and it's created to honor what her fans felt most connected to. […] She taught us that you don't have to show everything to like or be sexy. She taught us to be true to who we really are.
