Still don't know what skin type you have? If you are concerned about wrinkles that start to appear after 30 and do not know where to start when buying creams, serums or masks, read this before making any decision. We spoke with our collaborator and Neutrogena ambassador, Dr. Bertha Baum, an expert dermatologist in laser medicine and cosmetic surgery who practices at the Hollywood Dermatology clinic in South Florida, who has shared her best tips for designing a care routine that works for you.

Why is it important to choose products specifically adapted to your skin type?

I think it is the best investment. The routine does not necessarily have to have many steps, be very complicated or very expensive. It just follows a routine, something continuous and consistent that we do every morning and night, and soon the results are seen. I tell my patients that skincare is like going to the gym, consistency and discipline is the key to success. On the other hand, it is important to understand that each skin is different and what works for your friend is not necessarily good for your skin type. My recommendation is to visit a certified dermatologist who can analyze your skin and recommend the correct products for daily use.

How to know what type of skin we have?

I like to do a personalized analysis, but I try to classify the skin into different categories and I use a system in the office that gives me the possibility of choosing one of 16 options with a test since they are sometimes combined with each other: Acne / skin oily, rosacea / sensitive skin, pigmented / melasma skin, dry … Based on this I combine different ingredients so that the patient's skin looks its best and prevents the changes that appear with age and exposure to the sun. Taking the weather into account is also very important.

In addition to age, what main factors does one have to consider when buying creams and serums?

It is key to know if your skin is combined or only has one characteristic, it is also important to understand how the skin appears in the morning and look at what conditions the skin is at night. Look at how the skin of your biological parents is, genetics is very important. Also, as a dermatologist, I always ask about the type of job or lifestyle my patients have. All these factors influence the selection as well as if the patient likes to use few or many creams. As I mentioned, the categorization and description of the person's skin type is much more important than age. In general, patients should also understand that we do not have the same skin for life and that therefore we have to vary the products over the years.

What is your number one tip, mantra, or golden rule for caring for facial skin and preventing the signs of aging?

My mantra is consistency and discipline in everything we want to improve or maintain. When it comes to skin care, the golden rule is the use of sunscreen from an early age, every morning and, if possible, an antioxidant in the morning and retinol at night.
