Among the most common skin problems among Latinas are blemishes. And is that although there are many products that promise to disappear, not all give the expected results. Although the face is one of the areas that most concern us when it comes to spots, there are other parts that are also prone to them and that become a big problem. Among the most affected areas are the armpits, which are heavily stained and not necessarily in the sun.

We spoke with dermatologist Alicia Barba of Barba Dermatology in Miami to find out some of the causes of blemishes in this delicate part of the body and to share some effective solutions.

What is underarm hyperpigmentation?

Underarm hyperpigmentation is a frequent problem in which underarm skin loses its natural tone and appears uneven to the rest of the skin. This is because the skin produces more melanin than is necessary which gives the skin a different tone. Melanin is the pigment that gives skin its color.

What are the causes?

This overproduction of melanin usually happens from skin irritation in that area caused by a number of factors, especially different hair removal methods, but it can also be caused by other things like hormonal changes or a more serious health problem.

What are those more serious causes?

Acanthosis nigricans is a prominent condition, especially for women of color. They are like velvety plaques under the arms and on the neck, and may be due to undiagnosed type 2 diabetes. If a woman has severe hyperpigmentation, it is important to consult a professional because it could be more than a cosmetic problem.

How can we solve or improve this problem?

In my practice I have patients who come with this problem and feel anxiety because it is a great concern for them. It is something that can inhibit some women in terms of how they dress, how they act, and how they feel. That is why it gives me great joy that Dove is launching a new product, the Even Tone antiperspirant (available in pharmacies). This is a new option for women who want a solution. Its formula with vitamin b3 and a ¼ moisturizer, helps restore the underarm skin's natural tone, while hydrating them.

What other things do you recommend to avoid staining so much?

I recommend that women be very aware of their hair removal routines and never shave without a cream or gel to lubricate the skin. They should also avoid over-exfoliating or using a very rough or irritating wax. I recommend visiting a professional esthetician for laser treatments, in the most chronic cases. Regardless, it's always important to see a dermatologist if you have any questions about your skin. It's also good to look for products made specifically to restore skin's natural tone.
