If you are concerned about pollution from the fashion industry and always try to find a way to make your wardrobe more sustainable, you will have already realized that finding underwear made with organic materials, respecting the rights of workers and also with a Nice design is not an easy task.
This week I discovered Kala, a new brand that aims to respond to this demand with its models of panties, bras, pajamas and undershirts made in New York from organic cotton. We spoke with its founder, Rebecca Migirov, who told us about how to care for underwear so that it lasts longer in perfect condition and you do not have to buy as much.
What made you decide to create your own underwear brand?
I spent most of my adult life trying to find comfortable bras that really support and identify with, not just pink push up bras that are only two sizes. I knew I wasn't the only one looking for something like that, so I decided to do it myself. Sustainability is a very important part for us, fashion is one of the most polluting sectors and Kala tries to change that by doing things well.
Why do you think you should invest in sustainable underwear even if it is more expensive?
Your intimate apparel is literally the most intimate thing you have. The underwear you choose can have a direct impact on your health and well-being, so investing in lingerie that is made with the best materials for you, such as organic cotton, is actually an investment in your own health.
What can we do to make our underwear last longer?
Never put underwear in the dryer. You can wash it in the washing machine, but I prefer to wash my bras by hand and let them dry on a flat surface. This prevents the rubber from overflowing and maintains the shape of the cups. When I wash by hand, I usually use a simple, fragrance-free bar of soap, you don't need more than that. For panties it is less important to wash by hand, but you should dry it naturally. When you wash by hand use cold water and little detergent, in fact I prefer to use baby detergent when I wash my underwear.
You can find Kala at her Pop Up in New York until this Sunday (208 Bowery street) and at wearkala.com and her Instagram account @wearkala.
If you want to get on the bandwagon of sustainable fashion, remember this mantra of buying less and better quality and above all taking care of the clothes you already have. It's a treasure!
