After more than a decade processing and straightening hair, stylist-turned-natural- hair Carolina Contreras decided to cut off all processed hair and let it grow in its own way. The result? The beauty influencer fell in love with her look again and now travels the world giving talks and advice to convince women and girls to love and accept her hair as it is. We talked to her as she passed through New York where she was promoting Unilever's What Moves You campaign about her favorite shampoo, pineapple trick and more. Do not miss it.
At what point did you decide to love your natural curly hair?
For many years I received many messages from the media, magazines, billboards, etc. that my beauty was not an accepted or pretty beauty and there came a time when I decided that this was not true and I decided that my beauty was pretty. I cut all my straight hair and love every crime, every little boy and every curl on my head.
What are you looking for in a shampoo?
I love using sulfate-free shampoo and I love using coconut products because it penetrates the strand and doesn't stay on top of the hair.
How often do you wash your hair?
I have flexibility to wash my hair every 5 to 7 or 8 days. I absolutely love Dove's dry shampoo that has coconut and applying it to the scalp allows a person like me boxing sauce to make my hair smell super rich and stay clean.
What is the best way to use dry shampoo on curly hair?
People use it the wrong way, so the best way to use it is to make sure the shampoo is 10 to 12 inches from your hair so it doesn't leave a residue. Also make sure you divide the strands and apply it to each strand.
What do you do at night to keep your hair with fabulous curls?
I sleep with a silk or satin pillowcase. The cotton covers absorb all the natural oils and also products that we carry on our hair and face and leave it dry, but a satin one does not and allow the hair to stay more hydrated all night.
What is the pineapple trick?
You throw all the hair forward and gather it with a silk or satin ribbon all up. The next morning you wake up with amazing hair.
