Nails are a very important part of any woman's personal care. And there is no way to hide them. That is why most women pay special attention to their hands, especially the enamels they choose to make them look fabulous. Thanks to advances in the world of beauty, we can now find more natural enamels with ingredients that are not toxic. One of those collections that is giving something to talk about is that of the Puerto Rican manicurist Joaquín Manuel, whose enamels are made with the best ingredients that will not cause fungus or infections on your nails.

We spoke with the manicurist of celebrities such as Olga Tañón, Belinda and Adamari López, among others, to tell us everything about this innovative collection and share with us some tips to have enviable and healthy nails.

Joaquín, how did the idea of creating this collection come about?

“The idea arises from the death of my mother. When my mother started receiving chemotherapy treatment to fight her breast cancer, she experienced side effects that did not allow her to paint her nails due to strong chemical smells. In desperation I begin a deep investigation into the search for odorless enamels and it is then that I educate myself on the chemicals that enamels contain and their consequences such as fungus, yellow nails, dehydrated nails and weakness in the keratin of the nail. Unfortunately in the process my mother dies and I did not continue with the project, until one day I made the decision to continue it and this whole story begins.”

What are the effects of the ingredients used today in conventional enamels and how do they differ from yours?

“The side effects caused by conventional enamels are terrifying. These chemicals cause cancer and other health conditions. It also weakens them, dehydrates them, makes them yellow and can create fungi among other effects.

Joaquín Manuel enamels are free of toxic elements, patented as 7 free, this means that they do not contain Dibutyl phthalate (DBP), Formaldehyde, Toluene, Formaldehyde resin, Camphor, Xylene, Parabenoss. They also do not contain fragrances."

How do we know when a nail product is harmful? What do you advise us to take care of them?

If when we examine them we notice how they change color, they deteriorate, age and lose their natural shine. It is important that you know that the nails must be flexible and that the natural color must be translucent pink. I always recommend that if you use conventional enamels, check every week how your nails are, periodically remove all chemical products from the nails, start an oil treatment and use paints free of the 7 most harmful toxins”.

What should we do to have the best fingernails and toenails?

To keep fingernails and toenails in good condition, I always recommend the following:

  • Use enamels free of toxic chemicals
  • Avoid biting your nails
  • Use plastic gloves for household chores
  • Apply moisturizers constantly
  • Visit your manicurist every 15 days
  • Drink lots of water
  • Apply natural oils to the cuticles

Tell us a bit about your career and your work with celebrities

- I have been in love with my industry for 18 years. In 2013 I started working as an educator for one of the main nail polish lines, which led me to travel throughout the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean. Currently I continue to work as an educator raising awareness about the toxins in beauty products, particularly nail polishes. In the process I have worked with politicians, successful businesswomen and celebrities such as Belinda, Adamari López, Olga Tañón, Alicia Machado, among others.”
