Singer Amara la Negra is one of the celebrities who campaigns the most for curly and afro hair in her everyday looks. “As a girl I used to wear curly hair all my life. My mom ripped it off because [there is] the concept that to be pretty you have to have straight hair. It burned my skull, I had some awful moments in order to see myself well,”the singer told us in an exclusive interview about her style and beauty secrets.
Gone are those times for the Dominican who attended yesterday with her iconic hairstyle covered in colored butterflies at the Naturally Curly presents Texture On The Runway event organized by Sally Beauty to promote curly and textured hair on the catwalks.
In addition to the butterflies on her head, the singer was amazing in a single-sleeve fuchsia jumpsuit and matching gold sandals with oversized matching earrings.
“At 16 I started educating myself a little more about African American culture, Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, Rosa Parks, people who had the courage to stand up and say no. Then I felt: 'Am I smoothing my hair and going through this whole mission [job] to look good for society?' [For] society is never going to be enough, so I decided not to straighten myself anymore because it wasn't me. I appreciate the moment when I made that decision because after that I have been extremely happy,”he acknowledged in this interview.
If you envy Amara's hairstyle, keep in mind that, as she herself confessed to us, she also has a bit of a trick. “My hair is naturally an afro, but I do use extensions to add volume. I tell you a secret … I just let my mom do my hair for me. I don't go to the living room, I don't like anyone to put their hand on my head. I feel like my head is my crown, my energy and I don't feel like everyone has to touch my space.”
In addition, he confessed that to take care of it, he only uses masks based on natural products such as avocado and mayonnaise.
