We talked to Ingrid Carney, the founder of the Ingrid & Isabel brand, who a few years ago succeeded with her invention of the Bellaband, a garment halfway between the sash and the belt that is used to hold all kinds of pants and skirts during and after of pregnancy. Carney revealed her secrets to dress well at this stage and led her to design her own line of clothing and accessories for pregnant women that is now sold at Target and on her own website.

How did you decide to become a designer and entrepreneur?

The idea to create Ingrid & Isabel was born in 2001, when I was pregnant with my daughter Isabel. My tummy grew and one morning suddenly my pants were no longer closed. Then I realized that I needed something to hold my pants unbuttoned. That is where the inspiration for my invention, the Bellaband, was born. From there the women asked me for more. I spoke with other mothers to better understand what their wardrobes needed during pregnancy. After listening to their stories I knew I wanted to do something more for them. We always design with your needs in mind and I think that is what makes this brand so special.

What inspired you to create your new collection?

At Ingrid & Isabel we aim to solve the problems of pregnant women as their bodies change. I am excited to be working with Target on this collection because we both have a goal of giving expectant mothers an easy way to express their own style with confidence and comfort throughout their pregnancy. We like functional, fashionable and comfortable.

What are the best styling tips you would give a pregnant woman who doesn't know what to wear?

First, try on your closet stuff and see what it's still worth to you. Tight knitwear and draped garments can help you in the first months. With Bellaband you can continue wearing your normal pants and skirts, then you can wear it with maternity pants that still fit you big. Second, you need to get hold of basics. I suggest seamless shirts and leggings, which you can wear on any occasion. Jeans are another important investment in pregnancy with which you can dress more groomed or more casual. In my line, jeans have a patented panel -Crossover Panel- that is designed to support your tummy and support the small of your back. They are very comfortable! [I recommend] choosing clothes that can be put on top of each other and that you can wear during and after pregnancy.

How to dress for a special occasion, such as a wedding or event, when you are pregnant?

Find a style that is comfortable and makes you feel beautiful. For some women, that may be a tight dress that marks the tummy, for others a vaporous dress with a beautiful print.

Is there anything you should avoid wearing when expecting a baby?

Don't feel like you have to sacrifice style for comfort. It's a beautiful and exciting time, and you can wear fashionable clothes, such as off-the-shoulder dresses or open-shoulder sweaters, while you're pregnant and still feel comfortable and confident about yourself. Show off your tummy style!
