Can you imagine walking to the altar in lace pants? In the last week of New York bridal fashion it was clear to us that modern pants, jacket suits, capes and accessories will be worn next year and The Modern Bride, the latest collection that designer María D´Ocón presented last night at Miami does nothing but confirm it.
We talked to the Catalan dressmaker about her latest creations, the art of finding the perfect dress for such a special day, and how inspiration came to her thanks to none other than Celia Cruz.
How would you describe your style as a designer?
Sophisticated, modern and daring. My designs are inspired by the woman of today: strong, confident and adventurous. For my The Modern Bride collection I decided to focus on designing unique garments, such as pants, jackets, skirts and dresses that can be combined to suit the bride.
Where did you find the inspiration for this collection?
I wanted my dresses to represent the modern and creative woman who travels and explores new destinations while making the important decision to marry the person she loves. I have been inspired by the enterprising girlfriend who fights for her dreams and lives life as she wishes. The truth is that during many nights when I was sewing until dawn I was watching Celia Cruz's series and the character of the character gave me strength and inspired me to continue with my dream. I want to dress women who like her, and many others throughout history, know what they want and above all they never give up.
Do you think there is any secret to “choosing well” a wedding dress?
The secret is to follow your instincts when you look in the mirror. It is good to hear the opinions of your mother, bridesmaids, family etc. But in the end it is your decision and you should feel comfortable with yourself since it is your day, and you are the protagonist.
What would you recommend to a future girlfriend who doesn't even know where to start?
First of all a lot of calm and patience because the process of choosing a dress takes time. Before going to the store I would recommend that you do some research. Yes, a search on the internet or in fashion magazines so that you have an idea of what you want and like. Once you have chosen the style, cut and look you can change your mind but at least you will save time.
What is the celebrity that you would be most excited to wear on your wedding day?
I would be very excited to dress Jeimy Osorio because she seems to me to be a very professional, friendly and self-confident woman. Also, Jeimy is the actress who plays Celia Cruz in the series of the same name and helped me in some way to enjoy the creation process while listening to her songs in the background.
