From the moment her husband became the new President of the United States, Melania Trump has become a topic of conversation for many, not only because of her new role as First Lady but also because of the outfits she has worn since then. To accompany her husband to the inauguration in Washington, Melania opted for a sober sky blue Ralph Lauren dress that gave much to talk about. But it was during the inauguration ceremony that Mrs. Trump looked impeccable in a strapless white dress by Hervé Pierre, a little-known designer who since then cannot believe everything that has begun to happen in her career.
"When I made that dress I had no idea what the impact was going to be," the creator told Bazaar.com. “Immediately my phone was filled with calls asking for interviews. I had investors and bankers from Dubai and people opening Instagram accounts with my name. Even Target called me to say, 'We are so excited because you're going to make a line for us.' And I said, 'Well, I didn't know what I was doing.'
According to him, at first the first lady hired him to be her costume designer. However, everything changed when the ex-model saw her designs.
"She knows fashion. She was a model and worked in a design studio, so she knows about construction.”Explained the French-born designer. “When I showed her the fabrics, she immediately chose the thickest, the most beautiful silk in Italy. She knows about fabrics. It was a very organic conversation because we both have the same vocabulary."
Although Melania trusted her vision, for the designer the opinion of the first lady was important when designing the outfit. What did you ask for?
"She was very specific about the neckline, about all the lines being parallel," explained Pierre, who worked as creative director for brands like Balmain, Oscar de la Renta and Carolina Herrera, the latter for 15 years. “It was very important for us not to follow the example of other first ladies' dresses. She is presidential now, she is not just a figurine."
Although designers like Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs and Philip Lim publicly said they were not interested in dressing Melania, others like Carolina Herrera, Ralph Lauren and Pierre are more than willing to design the outfits the first lady will wear in the next four years..
