Spanish Clothing In Maleficent's Wardrobe

If girls had previously dreamed of being princesses, starting with the premiere of Maleficent on May 30, many may change the fluffy tulle dresses for long black capes, and crowns for horns.

And it is that the protagonist of the new Disney movie, played by Angelina Jolie, is much more than a witch with a scepter. A team of fashion experts took charge of bringing the character to life, including the Spanish designer Manuel Albarrán, known for his haute couture metal pieces.

"The Maleficent I wanted to wear was elegant, feminine, very strong, with a dark point that witches have and very current in the sense of very avant-garde, with the newest," Albarrán told the AP agency.

Although at first she was only going to be in charge of designing some accessories, in the end she gave life to almost all of Jolie's accessories such as bracelets, rings, and even the collars and bibs of her dresses, to which she wanted to give a wild, feminine air, bright and dark.

"[Angelina] wanted to convey what she felt in the character so that we could put that point," said Albarrán. “He wanted to feel good about the character and what he was going to wear to make it credible. When she saw my work she already liked it, we started from some bases, she already knew what she might like within what I do”.

Accustomed to working with metals, this time the designer had to use more organic materials. "We had to do more skin work, with bones, feathers … like it came from the forest where she lived to make it credible," he said. It also included crystals in the bracelets, rings and necklaces, as well as quartz in the designs that evoke skulls, bones and silhouettes of different animals.

But not only the design was important, but also the weight and functionality of the pieces, so that Jolie could work without problems. "We had to make it very nice, but they could fit in with the character and not move in the middle of a scene," he said.

In addition to the accessories, Albarrán elaborated the complete suit with which Jolie appears in the last fight of the film, made with animal hair. "It was hair [and] it had to have a very feminine line, with a perfect silhouette and on a technical level, combining that was complicated," said the designer.

In addition to Albarrán, who has created custom pieces for Madonna, Lady Gaga and Beyonce, the team included makeup artist Rick Backer, winner of seven Oscars, who was in charge of the actress's cheek and ear implants, in addition to sculpting its iconic horns; Justin Smith, leatherworker and Rob Goodwin who designed the shoe.
