Actress Ximena Duque spoke to People en Español about her great loves: her husband Jay Adkins and their children Cristian and Luna. Her 1-year-old daughter changed her life completely. “Even my way of being a mother changed since when I had Cristian I was 19 years old and I was practically beginning to live,” says the 34-year-old Colombian actress. “It was a difficult time but I was able to get my son ahead. Today I have much better stability in all aspects: professional, personal, emotional, and this allows me to be a more patient mother and aware of all my daughter's needs from the day of her birth.”
After celebrating the girl's first birthday, Duque reflected on the most magical moments he has lived with the baby: “The day he first said 'mom', the day he took his first steps, the day he said 'dad' and 'Cristian'. The only thing my little girl has given me have been moments of joy.”
Dividing as a mom between the baby and her 14-year-old son has had its challenges, she confesses. Wow! It has not been easy. I think this is the most difficult task because in some way or another I always end up sacrificing time with one or the other, but I really enjoy the here and now, and every moment with them together or separately fill me to the fullest. Luna is one year old and everything is starting to get easier, since I take her more often to her brother's activities.”
Her husband Jay Adkins has been a great help. “The nights are my husband's, whenever he comes home from work he is the one who bathes her, gives her his bottle and puts her to sleep. He is a dad who wants to be too present in his daughter's life, which I love,”says the American businessman.
What advice do you have for mothers with babies at home? "The most important thing is that babies have an established routine and that they don't get out of it for anything in the world," recommends the actress. "There are people who say that parents' lives should not revolve around babies. I have also heard 'that the baby adapts to our lives'. I find it terrible to hear these things since the baby has his own needs and you have to respect them. For example, Luna every afternoon at 12:30 pm takes a nap and no matter what plan we have, we respect her sleep time. This makes her a happy baby and that we can enjoy her to the fullest.”
Duque looks like Wonder Woman fulfilling her roles as mother, professional and wife. "I still don't know how I do it but I do it," she concludes smiling. “I feel that the day is missing hours but you have to have clear and orderly priorities and make time for everything. Yes you can!
