Alicia Machado became an important figure during the election season after her headline-grabbing humiliation by Donald Trump, former owner of the Miss Universe pageant, was retold and criticized by Hillary Clinton during the first presidential debate last September. Following that evening, Machado was stormed with endless negative remarks by Trump and his followers, death threats on social media, but also encouraging words from people that condemned Trump's discourse.
“By being in this position they are going to say again that I am a wh-e. Go ahead, say it again. Say I look fat, that I look old. All those things [that] they can say to me, I've already gone through it,”stresses the 38-year old actress, who became a US citizen and casted her vote for Clinton. "They don't [intimidate me] because I got a grip on the situation," adds Machado. "As long as I stay firm and strong on my beliefs, I get the peace of mind I need to keep on going."
Although Machado didn't get the results she wished for in yesterday's election, she stays positive on what the experience has given her. “I am grateful to Clinton for her motherly love, for valuing my story and for giving me the confidence to share it with no fear, as a patriotic act for this great nation,” said Machado exclusively to People en Espanol. "I feel very happy, at peace, with satisfaction for the duty fulfilled [and] for having done what I had and was supposed to do. I am forever grateful to my community, with the new fans that gave me all their love and support to stand my ground.”
Being in the spotlight these past few months has not slowed down any of Machado's upcoming professional plans: setting up a virtual store Aliciamachado.com, filming a movie in the United States, penning her memories and the work of Mamis Solas, the foundation she set up to help single mothers like herself. "My daughter has motivated me to share my story," reveals the actress. "I have to share it. Maybe my story can get other people to understand the magnitude of having [Trump] as a leader of the most important country in the world,”stressed Machado.
