Becky G wants everyone to know that being second-generation Mexican-American doesn't make her any less Latina.
The singer wrote a personal essay for PopSugar to defend her pride in her roots to commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month. In the essay, the 19-year-old opens up about dealing with criticisms of not looking Latina enough or not speaking Spanish flawlessly. Although she wasn't born in Mexico and her Spanish isn't perfect, she makes it clear that she's passionate about her family and the culture.
“The truth is, the lack of language knowledge does not lessen the Latin blood running through our veins or the stories our last names carry. There is no 'look' to the passion us Latinos carry within us,”says the Sola singer.
She continues, “Although my Spanish is flawed and I didn't grow up in Mexico, I take pride in my roots. My family's history and the fact that all the traditions and morals passed down have shaped me to be who I am today is what it means to be a second-generation-born Mexican-American for me.”
Becky G also remarks that she feels a responsibility to show young Latinos that they can do anything they set their minds on, encouraging them to fight through the difficulties and to “never lose sight of [their] dreams.”
