YouTube star Bethany Mota is adding another title to her already impressive resume: school supply designer. The Latina vlogger rose to fame in 2009 with her fashion and style videos and landed herself a deal with Aéropostale for her own fashion line in 2013. The 20-year-old, who even interviewed President Barack Obama last year, is also trying her hand as a singer-songwriter.
With over 10 million subscribers on YouTube and over 5 million followers on Instagram, the entrepreneur is making her mark. “My goal is to always inspire people through the work I do,” she tells Chica.
With the new school season approaching, Mota gives us the scoop on her new school supply line with Target.
Tell us a little more about the collaboration
Bethany Mota: Thanks to Target and the Horizon Group, I was given the amazing opportunity to design my very own line of supplies for back to school. Being that Target has been one of my favorite stores for years, this was very exciting for me. Working with them is an absolute dream come true.
What inspired your designs for this collaboration with Target?
BM: I love anything DIY, so I wanted that to be the main focus of this collection. Everything is colorful, fun, and easy to use. What I love most about the products I have designed is that everything is customizable. You can color the notebooks according to your personal preference and use the stickers however you like.
Did you ever think you would be designing supplies?
BM: I never would have thought that designing my own line of school supplies would be a reality. I remember being a kid and always looking forward to running to the store for new notebooks and pencils to start the school year. The fact that I can now be a part of that experience for other kids is really cool to me.
Do you feel fashion influenced your creativity?
BM: Being interested in fashion and style definitely influenced my creativity. It has taught me the beauty of self-expression, which this collection represents very well.
Any favorites in the collection?
BM: Not going to lie, picking a favorite is hard! If I had to choose, it would be a tie between the dream catcher notebook and the rub-on transfers.
Why DIY instead of ready-to-use school supplies?
BM: I wanted to give people the opportunity to make everything in my collection their own. You can buy the same notebook as someone else, but it can end up looking completely different depending on how you decide to color / design it. To me, it is a perfect form of self-expression.
Your favorite school memory? Favorite subject?
BM: My favorite school memory would probably be whenever I was just genuinely enjoying time with my classmates and not being so worried about always fitting in or being "COOL." My favorite subject in school was History!
