California is getting strict with young smokers.

Governor Jerry Brown approved a bill to raise the smoking age from 18 to 21 in the state of California, making it the second state to do so with Hawaii.

Over 100 cities have the smoking age of 21 including New York, San Francisco, and Boston.

Persons under the age of 21 in California are not allowed to purchase tobacco, but service members are an exception. Active military personal will be able to buy cigarettes at the age of 18.

According to CNN, several organizations expressed their support of the new law including The American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society's Cancer Action Network, and the American Lung Association.

This new law comes after The American Academy of Pediatrics issued a statement in October strongly advising states to raise the smoking age.
