Almost a year has passed since Gina Rodríguez - star of the Virgin (CW) show Jane - revealed that she suffers from hyperthyroidism and Hashimoto's disease, an incurable condition.

Hyperthyroidism is an imbalance of the thyroid gland that, among other things, can cause weight and heart problems. On the other hand, Hashimoto's disease is an immune system disorder also related to the thyroid.

In an interview with Self magazine, the actress of Puerto Rican origin has revealed the steps she has taken to be able to control both ailments and continue her life.

"[Hashimoto] affects so many aspects of my life, I have had it for so many years [that] the rebellion of not taking care of myself cannot exist anymore," the 33-year-old actress told Self.

Said illness was diagnosed at the age of 26, seven after hyperthyroidism was detected. Because of this, he explains, he has had to limit dairy and the amount of gluten he consumes. “So many of my ills have disappeared. It feels like being free. This is something new”, he exclaimed about the benefits of his radical changes.

However, despite his iron discipline, Rodríguez admits that his fight has not been easy and has been full of setbacks. "I can not say that I am always on it, but is that man, I am human," he admits about maintaining his diet.

Additionally, the star of the new movie Annihilation (with Natalie Portman) confesses that she recently started experiencing panic attacks and that these stemmed from the medicine she consumes to balance her thyroid.

"I recently started having really exhausting panic and anxiety attacks," the actress told Self. After realizing that it was not just stress that she suffered and changing the dose of her medicine, the lady has made even more changes. Among them are becoming a vegetarian and starting to lift weights.

Celebrities such as top model Gigi Hadid, Zoe Saldana and the daughter of presenter Chiquinquirá Delgado are on the list of celebrities suffering from Hashimoto's disease.
