The legendary quote, “Don't judge a book by its cover” is the main storyline for the newest upcoming animated film from Blue Sky Studios: FERDINAND. The movie tells the story of a giant bull, who although may seem scary, actually has a caring heart. After being mistaken as dangerous, he is captured from his home to become a fighting bull. Ferdinand is determined to go back to his family and makes new friends in this comedy adventure.
Brazilian director Carlos Saldan has directed this new film, which is based off of the 1936 book “The Story of Ferdinand” by Munro Leaf and Robert Lawson. Saldanha also directed the popular movies “Rio” and “Ice Age.”
Set in Spain, several Latino celebrities were cast in the film, including Golden Globe Award winning actress Gina Rodrigurez, comedian Gabriel Iglesias, actor Raúl Esparza, Mexican TV personality Karla Martinez, and Spanish actor Miguel Ángel Silvestre. Other cast members include WWE legend John Cena, who will voice the main character Ferdinand, Kate McKinnon and Anthony Anderson.
“He's a peaceful bull,” Dinner told the TODAY show. People think he's a fighter because he's a big bull. Sound familiar?”
Gina Rodriguez is also set to star in another animated film to be released later this year. The Jane the Virgin actress will voice the Virgin Mary in The Star, the Sony Pictures Animation's take on the story of the first Christmas. She took to Twitter to make jokes about playing another virgin character. "Super stoked to be playing the voice of The Virgin Mary in #TheStar animated movie," Rodriguez tweeted. "I got this virgin mother thing down."
The film will be released in theaters on December 15, 2017.
