Dry Law In Mexico Due To Coronavirus?

After ordering the closure of bars, clubs and entertainment venues as part of the health emergency, Mexicans fear that the country will install a dry law that prevents the purchase of alcohol as it already happens in some states.

That is why in establishments throughout the Mexican geography thousands of consumers were seen stocking up on wine, beer and spirits so as not to pass a possible confinement without alcohol supplies.

The truth is that until now the sale has only been suspended in establishments denominated as non-essential during this health crisis.

That did not prevent the Governor of Tabasco, Adán Augusto López Hernández, from taking a step further and with a strong hand ceased all sales of alcoholic beverages in any establishment in his state, including supermarkets.

"In Tabasco, starting today, we are going to take extraordinary measures and actions to have better attention to the problems we are facing due to the coronvavirus," he announced through his social networks. “I have instructed […] to temporarily suspend this health emergency, the sale of alcoholic beverages and beer, the sale, distribution, marketing, in all kinds of commercial establishments. This is in warehouses, in convenience stores, in supermarkets, there will be no sale of alcoholic beverages. I want to tell you that the state government is working very closely to ensure the health and well-being of the people of Tabasco."

Tabasco is the first state to declare dry law in Mexico during this pandemic. Other states such as Quintana Roo, Campeche and Sonora will carry out a monitoring of the sale by hour, according to the newspaper Milenio.

But these state measures have alarmed citizens of the rest of the country, who fear an extension to the rest of the country of the order of the governor of Tabasco.

The head of government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, pointed out that so far there is no alcohol prohibition in the stores designated as essentials that remain open.

"At no time has a dry law been enacted in [Mexico] City due to the declaration of the health emergency," he assured through his social networks. "Self-service stores are asked not to close or condition the sale of alcoholic beverages."

The increase in sales left some stores without product in certain parts of the country, similar to what happened with antibacterial gel and toilet paper, according to the Mexican press.

The dry law is a measure that prohibits the sale of alcoholic beverages for a time determined by the authorities. In Mexico, generally, dry law is decreed on election days and various religious celebrations.
