A young nurse who was diagnosed with coronavirus killed herself out of anxiety and fear of infecting others with the disease in Italy.

Daniela Trezzi, 34, was suffering "a lot of stress" thinking that she could be spreading the virus to the patients she was attending at the San Gerardo Hospital in Monza, in the Lombardy region, the Daily Mail reported.

Italy's National Federation of Nurses expressed "pain and dismay" at Trezzi's death in a statement, noting that he had been working in his hospital's intensive care ward, but was quarantined after showing symptoms and giving positive on the coronavirus test.

"The condition and stress our professionals are under is under everyone's eyes," the federation said on its online portal, regretting that "a similar episode had happened a week ago in Venice, with the same underlying reasons."

The hospital's general manager, Mario Alparone, explained that Trezzi became ill since March 10 and "was not under surveillance" while at home, where he apparently took his life.

So far, 30,703 coronavirus patients have been reported in Lombardy. The regional councilor for welfare in Italy, Giulio Gallera, reported that the deaths increased to 4,178, of which 402 happened in just 24 hours, the Quotidiano newspaper reported.

Although the outbreak started in the city of Wuhan, China, Italy is the country that has been most affected in terms of deaths from the pandemic and was the first nation in Europe in which an outbreak spread so rapidly. The Lombardy area is the hardest hit in that country, where the death toll has already exceeded that of China.
