The coronavirus pandemic is already a global issue; Given this, the various countries have taken actions to prevent its further spread. Now, the International Olympic Committee has set its position on this crisis, since the new edition of this contest would take place on July 24 and August 9 in Tokyo. Dick Pound, a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), revealed that the event will be postponed.
"Because of the information that the IOC has, the postponement was decided," Pound told the US media outlet USA Today. “The parameters to carry it out in the future have not yet been determined; but the Olympic Games will not start on July 24”.
As expected, this measure is taken in response to the international health crisis caused by COVID-19; However, there are several factors that must be analyzed as mentioned by this member of the organization.
"This step will allow better visibility of the rapidly changing development of the health situation worldwide and in Japan," he added. "It will serve as the basis for making the best decision for the benefit of the athletes and the rest of those involved."
At the moment, an exact date for the change is unknown due to the complexity of holding a sporting event of this magnitude. The only thing that Dick Pound mentioned is that, surely, it will take place until next 2021. At the moment, a maximum of four weeks are foreseen to determine and announce a new date for the Olympic Games.
"The change will come in stages," he added. "We will postpone this and begin to deal with all the ramifications of moving this, which are immense."
