The tragic case of little Gabriel Fernández, the 8-year-old boy who lost his life to the beatings of his mother and boyfriend, caused such a stir that Netflix will tell his story in a docuserie that will explore the circumstances surrounding his death in May. from 2013.
According to various media, the series titled The Trials of Gabriel Fernández covers the death of the little boy, the arrest of his mother Pearl Fernández and her boyfriend Isauro Aguirre, who was sentenced to death in 2018 after being found guilty of murder in first degree, with the aggravating circumstance of torture.
For her part, Gabriel's mother pleaded guilty to the same charge and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Gabriel was found naked with a broken skull, several shattered ribs, severe burns, and traces of pellets on his body at the family's home in Palmdale, California, on May 22, 2013. The boy was unable to recover from the injuries he suffered. they had caused and died two days later.
"I feel like Gabriel could have been saved in 12 different ways and that's how intense and distressing this story is," documentary filmmaker Brian Knappenberger said, according to People.
The documentary also shows the role the government played and how the system failed to protect Gabriel, despite multiple reports and alarming signs that the boy was being mistreated.
During the trial, the prosecutor claimed that Gabriel was forced to eat cat litter and forced to sleep in a small cabinet, in addition to being beaten by Aguirre with bats and metal buckles, among other objects.
According to the documents, the boy's torture began eight months before his death, when Pearl moved in with Aguirre in 2012.
