The discovery of 39 bodies inside a trailer found in a town in the south-east of England has puzzled the British authorities, who have arrested a 25-year-old man in connection with this multiple murder, one of the most numerous in history from the country.

The macabre discovery was made Wednesday morning shortly before 2 a.m. when police were notified that several bodies had been found in the truck parked at an industrial complex in the town of Grays, in Essex County.

Emergency services went to the place where the bodies of 38 adults and a teenager were found. The trailer came from Bulgaria, confirmed Pippa Mills, Essex Police Deputy Sheriff. Authorities believe the truck entered the country this Saturday through the port of Holyhead in Wales.

The suspect was described as a 25-year-old man from Northern Ireland detained on "suspicion of murder". The subject is already questioned by the police.

Bois Johnson, Prime Minister of England, reacted to the incident by posting a tweet to lament the tragedy

"This is a tragic incident in which large numbers of people have lost their lives," exclaimed Andrew Mariner, head of the local police, explaining that the process to identify the victims is going to be quite long.

The circumstances of the tragic incident are still unclear, but could point to a case of illegal migrant smuggling, according to The New York Times. In recent years the region has become a route for the entry of people without papers.

This dramatic case recalls a similar incident that occurred in the port of Dover, also in England, where 58 migrants from China were suffocated inside a truck in 2000.
