Police in the Dominican Republic reported Tuesday that the bodies of the New York couple who disappeared in late March in Samaná have apparently been found.

"Our National Police reports on the discovery of the lifeless bodies of a man and a woman with characteristics similar to the American couple, whose whereabouts are unknown since 04-01-2019," it was explained in an official statement issued this Tuesday. "The bodies [were sent] to the National Institute of Forensic Pathology for autopsy purposes, and the information was cross- referenced with the US authorities in order to certify if the deceased correspond to the couple Portia Denises Ravenelle, 52 years old, and Orlando Moore, 40 ″.

The couple disappeared last March 27 after leaving the Gran Bahía Príncipe Cayacoa hotel where they had stayed. That day, Ravenelle and Moore, who were on a romantic getaway and were residents of Mount Vernon, were to board a flight home but never did.

The document explains that fishermen told the police that on the morning of March 27 they heard "a noise coming from the vicinity of kilometer 19 of the Las Americas highway, Santo Domingo Este." There they found a lady who had no document "and was in serious condition." The woman was transferred to the Doctor Darío Contreras hospital where she was in intensive care until April 4, when she died.

For their part, fishermen reported the finding of a car that was at the bottom of the sea and that could not be identified or rescued due to poor water conditions in that area.

The hotel where the couple stayed, in the province of Samaná:

In parallel, on March 31, Moore's body was found in a state of decomposition in the Sans Soucí neighborhood, east of Santo Domingo, that is, about 21 kilometers from where the submerged car was located.

The case powerfully drew media attention after Moore's sister reported her brother's absence to authorities without finding answers.

We are aware of reports regarding the American couple who disappeared in the Dominican Republic. The well-being and safety of American citizens is one of the highest priorities of the State Department,”a spokesman for the agency told People about it.

For her part, Cheryl Freeman and her boyfriend Carter Washington, a couple who met Ravanelle and Moore during their holidays, assured CNN that the couple apparently had to board their flight early in the morning at an airport located 100 miles from their hotel.

The inquiries continue.
