Georgia state police are investigating the deaths of the 3-year-old Raelynn and Payton Keyes, who were found dead Sunday afternoon inside a car in the yard of a home in the town of Hinesville, according to local media.

An autopsy revealed that two sisters died from heat stroke. The girls did not live in the house where the car was parked, although police Capt. Tracey Howard said they spent time there, according to People.

According to the officer, the girls were living with a foster home together with two other brothers for about a year and a half. In addition, he revealed that between the foster parents and the owners of the house where the little girls' bodies were found there is a link that has not yet been clarified.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the last time the girls were seen alive was when their caretaker put them to sleep, so it is unknown how they ended up in the car in which they lost their lives. Inside the vehicle in which the minors were found, the emergency services registered a temperature of 92 degrees Fahrenheit, according to People.

"This is all devastating," said the girls' birth mother, Skye Keyes. “We already lost a daughter in 2014, and six months after her death we found out that we would have our girls. It was a double blessing and now they are gone because of someone else's negligence. We have two children to keep us strong, but we feel like the world has collapsed.”
