A grandmother in Orlando is not out of shock and outrage after her 6-year-old granddaughter, who suffers from a health problem, was handcuffed and detained at her school for throwing a tantrum.
The girl was taken to a detention center from which she was later released, but now the family is asking for a full investigation into the circumstances in which she was detained.
The events happened last Thursday at the Lucious & Emma Nixon charter school in Orlando when little Kaia Rolle had a tantrum and was taken to the school offices. When someone on the staff wanted to calm her by grabbing her wrists, the girl kicked her.
The minor was arrested and handcuffed right there by a police officer who works at the school. She was then booked and her fingerprints were taken, according to attorney Rebecca J. Kavanagh on Twitter.
Meralyn Kirkland, the girl's grandmother revealed, that her granddaughter suffers from the sleep disorder known as apnea. According to the woman, the night before the incident the girl had not slept well, which affects her behavior.
"He has an ailment and we are working to try to resolve it," Kirkland told local channel WKMG-News 6.
The woman assured that as soon as she learned that her daughter had been arrested, she went to the place where she was being held. "They told us that we had to wait a few minutes because Kaia was being fingerprinted and when they told me that they were fingerprinting, that fell like a ton of bricks," he explained. "How can they do that to a 6-year-old boy because he kicked someone?"
Orlando Police Chief Orlando Rolón said in a statement obtained by The Washington Post that Dennis Turner, the police officer who arrested the girl, is being investigated in connection with the events. Likewise, it was revealed that Turner, who is suspended until the investigation concludes, had also arrested another 8-year-old boy the same day at the same school.
Local regulations state that in order to detain a child under the age of 12, approval from a supervisor is required, which Turner did not do in either case.
The police officer has a history of behavioral problems and was reprimanded in 1996 for "underperforming" after the suspect's custody was misplaced. A complaint against him was also received in 2016 from a man who accused him of using excessive force because Turner apparently fired him five times with the Taser electric pistol, according to The Orlando Sentinel newspaper.
