More than 55 million students across the United States are returning to school this fall, with 13 percent generally transporting themselves on foot or by bicycle. Morning Chaos Morning is the most dangerous time to drive or walk within a quarter mile of a school zone, due to an increase in distraction and congestion.
Los Angeles, Savannah, New York, Philadelphia, and Honolulu are home to the most dangerous and distracted school zones in the United States.
School begins, but also distraction
When comparing July to September (non-school month versus school month), there is a 5 percent increase in distracted drivers (2,500 trips total).

High schools experience the greatest amount of distraction.
More traffic, more distractions.
As more drivers are driven in a designated area, the level of distraction increases.
Slowing down
More than half of all distracted events occur at less than 20 mph, the rest fall between 30 and 39 mph. Very few events occur at more than 40 mph in school zones.
