More than 200 celebrities and personalities joined actresses Eva Longoria and América Ferrera in an open letter of support for the Latino community after the bloody El Paso shooting, immigration raids, and increased assaults on Hispanics

The letter published on Friday in various media outlets had the support of figures such as, among others, Jennifer Lopez, Salma Hayek, Gina Rodriguez, Becky G, Eugenio Derbez, Ricky Martin and Lin-Manuel Miranda, who asked the victims of hatred-instigated attacks report them to the authorities.

"If you feel terrified, heartbroken and defeated by the bombardment of attacks against our Latino community, you are not alone," begins the text promoted by LatinX Lideres and allies of the organization Querida Familia. "They will not break us, they will not silence us. We will continue to denounce any inhumane and hateful treatment of our community. We will demand dignity and justice”.

The letter coincides with a very delicate moment for the Latino community, still shocked by the El Paso, Texas shooting, in which a young man credited with an anti-immigrant manifesto killed 22 people, as well as the arrest of 680 people in the Migratory raids on seven agricultural plants in the state of Mississippi.

The letter denounces that "fear and pain" spreads among Latinos, who have been "slandered", separated from their families and their children locked in cages.

“The indignity and cruelty that we have endured will never deny the truth of the invaluable contributions we make to this country. We must be respected as human beings. And we will not stop fighting for us, for our children and for the soul of this nation”, he adds.

The activist Mónica Ramírez assured that the actresses, both mothers, were very aware of the content of the letter and, together with LatinX, contacted a long list of celebrities to obtain their support.

"What gives me hope is that, although there have been so many attacks against our [Latino] community and not other communities, we continue to present ourselves to [support] ourselves," Ramírez told People en Español. “We continue to denounce when we see an injustice, and although it is discouraging and we are tired and heartbroken, we remain committed to showing love for our community and our country. And I think that is admirable."

Mexican actress Olga Segura assured that she did not hesitate to support this project. “We hope this is a call to action. Now is the time to remember our power and embrace it - speak up and vote wisely! Your voice is your power, so don't be afraid to use it and hold your [political] leaders accountable,”Segura told People en Español.
