A New Jersey man was arrested and charged with murdering his girlfriend and her boss at a Maplewood, New Jersey home on Saturday, Essex County authorities confirmed.

Karen Bermúdez-Rodríguez, 26, and her manager David Kimowitz, 40, who owned a comedy club in New York, died early Saturday morning.

Bermúdez-Rodríguez, who was a student from Colombia, worked as a babysitter for the Kimowitz family and began caring for the Kimowitz children more than a year ago, a family friend named Johan Montoya told local press. Bermúdez-Rodríguez was in the United States studying English.

The suspect, Joseph D. Porter, 27, of Elizabeth, New Jersey, who was dating Bermúdez-Rodríguez, faces charges of murder, possession of weapons. He is currently at the Essex County Correctional Facility.

Police had responded to a report Saturday of an assaulted woman, according to the prosecutor's office. Authorities found Bermúdez-Rodríguez's body lying on the street, and Kimowitz died inside his residence.

Kimowitz was manager of The Stand, a comedy club and restaurant in New York. The Wall Street Journal featured him in a 2017 story about a city-wide comedy boom, and his club recently reopened in a new location near Union Square Park.
