Last Sunday, July 28, it will be recorded as one of the greatest days in the history of Latin American and Colombian sports, after a young man, named Egan Bernal and only 22 years old, managed to win the Tour de France.

117 years and 106 editions had to pass for the first time a Hispanic managed to take the precious yellow shirt that distinguishes him as the best rider in the world. But who is this young man who is stealing the admiration of millions and who is also the youngest rider in the last 110 years to win the Tour?

Egan was born in the small city of Zipaquirá, located just kilometers north of Bogotá, and from an early age he began to demonstrate that he would be a champion with his bicycle, despite the fact that his beginnings in cycling made him a very different: the mountaineering cycle.

After surprising with victories in multiple road cycling events in the world, 2018 became the year he made his debut in the Tour de France, being part of the ranks of the powerful Sky team, which had among its ranks Geraint Thomas and Chris Froome - winner of the competition on multiple occasions.

Just a year later, the young man returned to take the lead on his team and shape a dream that had been elusive for Latin America for decades. Although other Colombians like Nairo Quintana and Rigoberto Urán were very close to achieving this coveted title, Egan became the runner who was able to reap all that his compatriots have done over the past few years.

At his short 22 years, wearing the yellow shirt led him to tears on more than one occasion, leaving some of the most emotional images of the unforgettable 2019 edition of the Tour de France.
