Donald Savastano, a native of Queens, New York had a big surprise in early 2018, he won the winning ticket, he told ABC that his client had said that this money would "change his life" when he collected his check.

Among Savastano's plans were: to buy a van, go on vacation, and also go to an appointment that he had pending with the doctor, which he had not been able to pay due to money and due to not having medical insurance.

Savastano was an independent carpenter. "He had his own business," Scott told ABC. Savastano practiced a profession in carpentry to follow the family tradition after learning the art from his father.

"He didn't have insurance, and he hadn't been feeling well for a long time, I guess, and when he had money, he went to the doctor."

At this long-awaited appointment, the New Yorker, a native of Long Island County, was diagnosed with advanced-stage lung and brain cancer.

"I hoped the money would probably save your life," said Scott.

According to the obituary written by his family, Savastano was known for the quality of his work and his perfectionism. He always wanted to help others by teaching them "the correct way of doing things."
