The video of a polar bear prowling the streets of a city in northern Siberia, has gone viral after being caught sniffing around trash cans in search of food. According to reports, the animal appeared sick and hungry.

According to the Associated Press news agency, this is the first time in four decades that a polar bear has arrived in the Russian city of Norilsk, causing panic among its residents.

The female, who was first seen last Sunday, looked sick to her eyes and tired, exhausted from rubble and garbage, the Washingto Post reported.

According to the newspaper, the animal was captured Thursday morning and will be transported to a zoo where he will be treated for an emergency.

"It was obvious from the first moment we saw her, that she was quite stressed about being in the city and surrounded by so many people," vet Georgy Belyanin told the newspaper.

Some experts have speculated that the animal was raised by hunters to sell its fur, since it is usually the males that migrate long distances, and that it could be released to avoid being discovered and punished.

In February, around 50 polar bears invaded the city of Novaya Zemlya, forcing its residents to remain in their homes.

According to the World Wildlife Fund, "bears are classified as a vulnerable species, due to the continuous loss of ice in their habitat due to climate change."
