The streets of Manhattan and Brooklyn woke up this Wednesday with some sculptures that have caused quite a commotion, despite the fact that they are a crude and chilling reflection of what is today a reality on the United States border with Mexico.
As a sign of protest at the outrageous situation experienced by thousands of children who have been separated from their parents when crossing the border, multiple aftershocks that demonstrate the conditions in which infants are held by the country's immigration authorities flooded iconic points of the Big Apple.
“There are still children in cages at our border. Separated from their parents. Thousands go to bed shaking and scared and get up sick and scared. 6 children are dead”, they read signs hanging in the cages, which inside show a mannequin on the floor covered with an aluminum blanket.
The protest, which has been dubbed No Kids In Cages, has been attributed to the state-based organization Raices, which is fighting for the rights of immigrants arriving in the country.
“This is not somewhere else. This is happening the United States”, can be read on the online site that has been created for this demonstration. “More than 3,000 children have been separated from their parents at the border. They live in cages. They sleep on the floor. When they cry, they have no one to comfort them, adds the information.
Since the appearance of these replicas in Manhattan and Brooklyn, hundreds of photos under the hashtag #NoKidsInCages have been posted through social media. This protest “is for the children. We cannot be the nation that separates families,”adds another of the sections that explain this initiative.
“They spend an average of 154 days apart from their parents. They move them through about 17 different states. They sleep in freezing temperatures with just a blanket of less than $ 0.68 … This is not history. This is happening now”, read another of the texts contained on the website.
