A woman who had sexual intercourse before marriage was flogged in Indonesia before a crowd who photographed and videotaped her while being beaten with sticks.

The shocking scenes occurred in the ultra-conservative city of Banda Aceh, located on the northwest tip of the island of Sumatra and which is the only one where Shariah laws are observed according to the Muslim precept.

In photos distributed by the APE agency, the woman is seen kneeling before an executioner, known as algojo, dressed from head to toe in a black robe, mask and gloves. Armed with a cane, the man whipped her in front of the large crowd made up mainly of men who did not miss a single detail of the punishment taking photos and video.

In chilling images you can see the woman kneeling on the podium facing the knights while being whipped and some of them laugh.

At the end of the punishment, the woman was escorted by two female officers who, with their heads down, removed her from the scene.

According to the Daily Mail newspaper, right-wing groups have criticized this type of public punishment and have asked Joko Widoo, the president of Indonesia, to suspend these practices.

However, said source assures that the floggings are very popular in the province of Aceh, where 98% of its five million residents practice Islam.

In 2018 the Aceh authorities assured that from that year the floggings would take place behind closed doors, behind the walls of local prisons. However, in some cases, the practice continues to take place before the public eye.

This is the same province where the use of WiFi was prohibited in 2018 after discovering minors visiting porn Internet sites instead of "studying the Koran". Right there, in the Bireuën district, women and men were prohibited from sharing a table in a restaurant or public cafe unless they were married or visited the establishment in the company of a close relative.
