A few months ago we introduced you to our Superwoman, the Guatemalan Alida Boer who, after being a beauty queen in her country, decided to create her own line of bags, Maria Bags. From the beginning of her brand, Boer's idea has always been in addition to making beautiful and super colorful accessories that any of us would want in her wardrobe, also paying homage to her country, to the ancient textile traditions and to the women that today they make the bags.
Always with these objectives and taking advantage of the fact that these days Fashion Week is celebrated in New York, the designer has wanted to vindicate sustainable fashion by making a silent protest no more and no less than in Times Square, the most emblematic and noisy corner of the city.
During the act, a group of contemporary dancers performed a choreography in silence and wearing traditional Guatemalan garments that are 70, 80 and even 100 years old in some cases. Garments that carry a priceless cultural history. As Alida Boer explains in her statement to the media, this is an initiative that seeks to draw attention to how industrialization has led us to rampant consumerism and “irresponsible policies that have turned fashion into an industry without a face, without a soul and without identity."
“After seeing the environmental impact and everything so negative that fashion has had and working with artisans for a long time and seeing how these traditions are being lost, I said to myself“This cannot be”and decided to make this silent but creative protest and impressive”, explains the designer exclusively. "Also, instead of doing it with models, we did it with contemporary dancers and the clothes they wear are pieces from museums that are 70, 80 or 100 years old, they have a history."
In addition to Times Square, the event has also been repeated in other iconic points of the city of skyscrapers, such as the Met Museum or SoHo, where many stores of luxury designers and fast fashion of the city are concentrated.
“We are at a turning point where things have to change. We cannot continue abusing the environment and I think it is important to go back to our roots and give importance to what really has it”, he reflects.
