In their more than 60 years of life, Barbie dolls have evolved with the fashions and tastes of their time. For this reason, the popular toy of the Mattel brand continues to adapt and in the face of the current of inclusivity that has swept the fashion world, it now presents its new models for this 2019 that include a doll in a wheelchair and another with a prosthesis on the leg.
"Over the years the # Barbie # Fashionistas collection has evolved to better reflect the world of the girls around them," explained a post from the company published on Tuesday to publicize its new Barbies. "We are excited to expand our offerings as the most diverse and inclusive doll line in the world."
According to CNN, Mattel collaborated with Jordan Reeves, a 13-year-old activist who was born without his left forearm, to make the wrist with a prosthesis and to make his movements more "realistic".
The company also enlisted the help of Mattel UCLA Children's Hospital to develop the design for the wheelchair doll, which the company says is one of the most requested by Barbie fans.
"Although there are many types of wheelchairs, this was modeled according to the needs of an individual who suffers from a permanent disability," company spokespersons explained in a statement.
"[Barbie] is an icon of society and now she shows that there are different types of people … [that] can be attractive and something that children can play with," said Curt Decker, executive director of the National League. of Disability Rights. This is not Mattel's first attempt to produce a wheelchair-bound Barbie doll.
