Jussie Smollett Victim Of A Homophobic Attack

Jussie Smollett, one of the members of the hit series Empire (Fox) and who has openly expressed being gay, was the victim of a brutal attack by two men in the city of Chicago, in what appears to be a hate crime.

As revealed to TMZ through its online site, the brutal assault occurred in the early hours of this Tuesday, January 29, when the actor was heading home after eating something at a Subway chain restaurant.

Details of what happened add that the 35-year-old star was approached by two masked men who beat him harshly. Reports claim that the perpetrators shouted homophobic and racist insults at the actor during the attack.

When Smollett was down on the floor, the individuals put a rope around his neck and sprayed him with a liquid, which has been reported in reports as bleach. TMZ adds that when the two men escaped the place they shouted, "This is a MAGA country," in apparent reference to the initials of Donald Trump's presidential campaign catchphrase: "Make America Great Again." "Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking the case very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," police said in a statement, as reported by CNN.

After the attack, Jussie was able to get to Northwestern Memorial Hospital on his own to have his injuries treated. Although authorities say the actor and singer is in good condition, Smollett is also reported to have suffered a broken rib.

The actor has been part of the cast of the successful Fox series since 2015, playing the role of Jamal, a gay singer. Just days ago, the television star had received letters with strong racist, homophobic insults and with death threats.
