The sudden death of conservative journalist Bre Payton from the flu sparked a wave of reactions last week as she voiced her opposition to the vaccines years ago on Twitter. In certain cases, the presenter was also blamed in some way for having been a victim of her own ideology.

Given these reactions, whoever was his boss in the publication The Federalist clarified that Payton, 26, was not opposed to vaccination. Benjamin Domenech noted that the missing journalist was just a teenager when she wrote the vaccine tweet and that it had been taken out of context.

“Some media have used a tweet of hers when she was just a teenager to describe Bre as part of the anti-vaccine movement. This is extremely irresponsible and misleading, said Domenech in a statement, who assured that the famous tweet was nothing but a joke.

“Bre was a young woman with a good sense of humor and in the tweet mocking her home state of California, where vaccination rates were declining. In all the years he worked with us at The Federalist, where he wrote more than 1,000 articles, he never issued a single note opposing vaccination, added the editor, who is married to Meghan McCain, daughter of the recently deceased Republican Senator John McCain.

The news of Payton's death at such a young age caused a huge stir in broad sectors of the conservative movement, in which he was a rising star who appeared frequently on Fox News, among other media.

A friend said she found her unconscious on the morning of December 27 at her home, where she was transferred to a hospital, where she died the following day. She cited meningitis and the H1N1 virus commonly known as swine flu as causes of the sudden death. In her statement, Domenech cites H1N1 as the cause of death.
