A human trafficker implicated in the murder of two Cuban immigrants was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Colombian Fredis Valencia Palacios was sentenced this Tuesday in Florida for his connection to the death of young Cubans Dunieski Eliades Lastre and Edelvis Martínez Aguilar, reported El Nuevo Herald.

According to the prosecution, Valencia Palacios and two other coyotes were profiting from the trafficking of people who wanted to go from Colombia to the neighboring country of Panama through the Darien jungle. The final goal of these Cubans was to reach the United States.

In 2016, Edelvis Martínez Aguilar, her boyfriend Liover Santos and Dunieski Eliades Lastre Sedeño -citizens of Cuba- paid these traffickers to take them from Colombia to Panama. The journey ended in tragedy.

During their trip on September 7, 2016, the three Cubans were delivered by Valencia Palacios to the coyotes Jhoan Stiven Carreazo Asprilla and Carlos Emilio Ibargüen Palacios, in charge of a ship. These coyotes threatened Cubans with a knife and a gun. One tied the two Cuban men by the hands and threw them overboard, leaving them hanging by a rope inside the boat.

Santos survived and listened as the coyotes raped his girlfriend before cutting her throat and killing her. Santos also listened as the coyotes slaughtered their friend. The coyotes left Santos dead, but he went swimming and was found at sea by a fisherman and rescued by the Colombian army.

Santos took the authorities to the corpses of his girlfriend and Lastre and the coyotes were arrested after being located. Traffickers Carreazo Asprilla and Ibargüen Palacios will be sentenced on January 4 for the murders of these two victims at sea.
