Woman Suffers Brain Damage After Cosmetic Surgery

Laura Ávila, a Texas resident, traveled to Mexico in October to undergo cosmetic surgery and is in an induced coma after suffering severe brain damage. The 36-year-old Hispanic woman is in a Texas hospital receiving life support.

Laura traveled to Ciudad Juárez with her partner Enrique Cruz to have cosmetic surgery on her nose. Under anesthesia, the young woman suffered a heart attack and brain damage. Ávila, a real estate agent, went to Mexico to carry out the operation since it was more expensive in the United States, her sister told USA Today.

After several days hospitalized in a Mexican hospital, her family transferred her to a hospital in the United States. "The hospital basically held us hostage because we didn't want to pay the full amount," Angie Ávila, her sister, told USA Today about the hospital in Mexico.

Doctors in Texas gave him bad news. "They say that she suffered brain damage so severe that she will never be our Laura again," said Angie Ávila. "They injected anesthesia into her spine at the clinic and instead of flowing through her body, it entered her brain, causing severe swelling."

According to Angie, her sister will never be able to walk, eat or speak on her own again. However, their loved ones still do not lose hope. “Right now we are praying for a miracle. We really want a second opinion,”said her fiancé.

The family's lawyer, Larry Friedman, assures that they will file a lawsuit against the Rinocenter clinic in Ciudad Juárez.
