Just days after their marriage, Francheska and Joe Bechara were haunted by a tragedy while they were on their honeymoon in New York.

The couple from Sydney, Australia, married in front of family and friends at a lavish wedding on October 7, before heading to the Big Apple for a long-awaited vacation in the United States. However, just days after the trip, Francheska suffered a stroke.

"Joe went outside to take a smoking break and she was training in the gym," Francheska's brother-in-law, Joe Toubia, told the Australian press. "He went back inside and found her unconscious. It looked like she had been trying to use her phone to ask for help.”

Francheska, 27, was rushed to a local hospital where doctors allegedly told Joe that his wife suffered "multiple strokes," according to a GoFundMe page created by Joe's colleagues for the couple.

"Francheska has undergone 3 major brain surgeries to reduce swelling," reads a statement about the fundraiser. "What is now just the beginning of recovery."

Toubia told 9News in Australia that Francheska was in a medically induced coma. It will be at least three months before Francheska can return to Australia, according to the couple's site and GoFundMe page. Doctors are allegedly working to determine what caused the stroke.

Francheska and Joe met at their church and had eight years of relationship before joining their lives in marriage.

"She had no conditions that we were aware of," Toubia told 9News. "She was completely healthy. Doctors can't find the problem that caused all of this.”

Francheska has shown signs of improvement and has been able to squeeze her mother's hand, Georgette El-Ters.

"His mother asked him to squeeze her hand if he understood and he did, which was great," Toubia told 9News. "She is responding better than the doctors expected, to be honest, but it is going to be a long process before the swelling has subsided and they can discover the true extent of the damage."

The couple had recently bought a house in Australia, planning to move out after their honeymoon, according to the GoFundMe page. However, the couple's future remains unclear.
