The popular selfies that millions of users post on their social networks are not as harmless as they seem, since according to a recent study by the Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care of India, at least 259 people have lost their lives trying to take the perfect self portrait.

As revealed by the aforementioned investigation, the deaths caused by selfies have become a global problem and have led to the establishment of “no selfies” around the world to protect the integrity of people, since on many occasions, network users put their lives at risk in order to obtain the desired photo.

Among the most relevant data presented by the study, it should be noted that the majority of deaths occurred among people with an age range between 10 and 29 years. Adding also that the average age among the victims is only 23 years, that is to say that young people are the most vulnerable population.

On the other hand, the countries in the world in which more deaths were reported due to circumstances related to selfies were India, Russia, the United States and Pakistan.

It is not a secret that some of the users of networks like Instagram, Twitter or Facebook do whatever it takes to get that photo that can become a viral phenomenon and that brings thousands of new followers or likes. Many come to risk their lives on skyscrapers, bridges, chasms, cliffs, trains, cars, or wherever.

The renowned Hindu magazine also added in its report that 72.5% of the victims that have been reported have been men, making it clear that it is the male gender that is most willing to expose their integrity through a photo.
