A babysitter was arrested Wednesday after accidentally shooting a 10-year-old boy while she was taking selfies with a gun.
Elements of the Harris County, Texas sheriff's office reported that Caitlyn Smith, 19, and the victim's aunt, found the weapon while caring for the child in a Houston apartment.
Apparently the young woman thought that the pistol was unloaded and began to make portraits with the weapon. The gun accidentally went off and shot the boy in the stomach, CNN confirms.
The boy was rushed to a hospital where he was operated on. For her part, Smith was taken to the Smith County Jail where she was booked on charges of seriously injuring a minor, representing a second-degree felony.
For his part, Sheriff Ed González indicated on Twitter that despite the severity of his injuries, the minor recovers. “The 10-year-old boy was reported as in serious condition but is expected to make a full recovery. Caitlyn Smith [19 years old] and the minor's aunt have been arrested and accused of hurting a minor… Great job from the Child Abuse Unit.”
The suspect is expected to appear in court this Friday.
