Security cameras captured the moment an approximately 262-foot-long portion of the Morandi Bridge collapsed almost instantaneously and suddenly amid torrential rains.

The collapse occurred around 12:00 PM local and the Urban Search and Rescue Team (USAR) immediately went searching for survivors. So far, five people have been located alive, with serious injuries.

The structure connected the viaduct with the A10 motorway and dozens of cars and at least 22 victims were left among its rubble, the Reuters agency confirmed.

"It is unacceptable that such an important bridge … had not been built to prevent this type of collapse," said Edoardo Rixi, Deputy Minister of Transport for the Sky News24 chain.

The approximately 164-foot-tall bridge was built in the 1960s, and connects the Italian Riviera to the southern coast of France.

According to Reuters, road operators in Italy said that two years ago restructuring works were carried out on a fairly extensive section of the bridge and that maintenance work had been carried out on its bases before the collapse.
