The National Autonomous University of Mexico has admitted a 12-year-old student to its degree program in biomedical physics.

The institution, better known by its initials as UNAM, said Thursday that Carlos Santamaría Díaz is the youngest student in the history of the university.

Santamaría Díaz passed the entrance exam and has already completed a preparatory study at the university's chemistry school at its center of genetic sciences. UNAM said that he would be treated like any other student, without special privileges or benefits.

At the age of nine, the young man participated in university programs in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, and biology.

The boy, a native of western Guadalajara, got bored with public school at an early age and turned to the web where he learned the subjects of calculus and physics for himself.

During a press conference on August 3, the boy nervously ran his hands through his hair and spoke passionately about finding cures for rare diseases, his safety seemed typical of a college student.

When asked if he ever felt isolated by his intelligence, Carlos shrugged when he asked: "The truth is, no, I feel that the university has been very good to me, especially the chemistry faculty."

Her mother, Arcelia Díaz, said that, like any mother, she was proud of her son.

Carlos offered advice to the president-elect of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador: "First, I would tell him not to make the same mistakes as previous presidents."

Politicians should "take care of the country as they take care of themselves," he said. "This is a country full of people who have dreams and at the same time have no dreams because they have no chance."
