How did a young Dominican without a university degree get hired by Google? Juan Carlos Angustia García told his story on Medium.com. “As a Latino and a technology lover, I always dreamed of one day being able to work for a great company like Google. It was a dream that I never thought I could realize. Imagine that a young man from a small Caribbean town and without mastering English could get the opportunity to work in the internet giant, it was impossible,”admits the graphic designer, a native of Constanza.
In 1998 he began taking classes from Windows 95 and Microsoft Offices. Then she fell in love with the Microsoft Paint program. "Designing landscapes in Paint I discovered my passion for computers," he recalls. Then she started creating logos in Microsoft Power Point and self-taught she learned to use Adobe Photoshop. “Using Photoshop was something new, something I never imagined could change my life. I learned to design web banners, "he adds. Although she did not have the Internet at her home in Constanza, she was walking to a small computer lab in her town to do these online tutorials. “It was a time of great imagination and passion, my love for the computer and design was insatiable. It used to last hours and hours using the computer, whether it was trying to do some hip-hop track, learning to make photo montage or create graphic designs in Photoshop,”he recalls. "This is how I started what I would call my career as a designer today, and all thanks to access to all the information I could find using the Google search engine."
Although in 2004 he began to study advertising and graphic design at the university in Santo Domingo, he preferred to continue learning on his own. “The university did not offer me what I was passionate about. So I decided to study on my own in the things that really mattered to me,”he admits. He also gained experience working for advertising agencies. “There was a time when I doubted my talent, there will always be people who will make you doubt your potential, but I always trusted myself. My instincts are rarely wrong. In my early days I became underestimated, but my desire was so great that they never let me abandon my dreams,”he says.
After applying to Google and being rejected, some time later he received an email from the company requesting to interview him for a new position. "Google understood that now I could be a good candidate for the company and for that reason they wanted to interview me again," he says. "Google is Google, and of course, also the job I always dreamed of having and that of 3 million people who usually apply for a position."
He finally accepted the position of visual designer in Seattle working for Google Duo. "I have already been working for Google for about 10 months and every day is like living a dream," he concludes. "I am very grateful for the opportunity life gives me, to work with very talented people and on products that billions of people use around the world."
