It must be recognized that problems and conflicts do not give President Donald Trump a truce, who in the midst of his trade war with the world, his controversial relations with Russia and his pulse with the media, has appeared a new front that threatens to put you in serious trouble.
The heart of the matter is the leaking of an audio clip of the president's confidential conversation with his attorney Michael D. Cohen, until recently one of his top trustees who used to entrust him with the resolution of thorny and highly sensitive matters.
In the recording revealed on Tuesday night on CNN and that took place in September 2016, Trump discusses with the lawyer the delicate wrongdoing of the Aña through which they would buy from American Media, the firm that owns National Enquire and whose managers They are close to Trump, the rights to McDougal's story, with the alleged purpose of making sure it doesn't come to light.
"We are going to have to pay," says the lawyer in the recording, which is not of very good quality and sometimes everything that is said is not understood. "Pay in cash," Trump seems to reply.
Cohen replies with a "no, no, no" and then the word "check" is mentioned, but who exactly says it is unknown. Although the story is in the hands of their friends in the Enquire, who never published it, they both consider it better to have the matter entirely in their hands.
Why is it relevant
The conversation was brought to CNN by Cohen's attorneys, who are currently being investigated by New York State authorities for the possibility that payments, such as the one discussed in the recording, violate laws governing contributions to election campaigns.
Cohen's representatives point out that the talk shows Trump was aware of the McDougal payments issue, something the president has so far denied. His lawyer, Rudolph Giuliani, had said when the recordings first existed about the existence of those recordings, that they were going to demonstrate that his client knew nothing of the payments up to that point.
The content of the conversation seems to deny Giuliani's version and points out that Trump was aware of the whole thing.
Where does the mess come from
Cohen went from being an unknown character in the President's private milieu to the front page of the newspapers when it was revealed in January that he had created a company in Delaware that, in turn, had paid what was used to pay Clifford.
Cohen's move from confidant to a prosecutor's assistant has not sat well with the president, who was dispatched against his now-former lawyer. "What kind of lawyer tapes his client?" Trump wondered in a tweet, hinting that the leaked recording has been tampered with. "Very bad!".
