From executive producer Selena Gomez, you eat Netflix's newest young adult series 13 Reasons Why. Based on the best selling novel by Jay Asher, the latest hit centers around the real-life traumas that are faced by teenagers today, including teen suicide, bullying, mental illness and sexual assault. With her history of mental health issues and rehab, it's no surprise that the “Kill em with Kindess” singer felt drawn to the story.

Gomez actually felt a special connection to the main character, Hannah Baker, who decides to end her life and leave behind 13 cassette tapes to reveal the reasons why. "I see myself as Hannah so much," Gomez told The Hollywood Reporter. "I wanted it to feel like anyone can see themselves in this."

The singer was originally cast to star as Hannah in the a movie adaptation of the novel back in 2011 and now she explains why she chose to stay behind the cameras saying, “A book is frightening for me because I know the cult following it has, which is the reason why I didn't want to be in it.”

Katherine Langford, who plays Hannah, revealed that although Selena wasn't a part of the cast that her and her mom were extremely involved and supportive along the way. "Even though Selena is Selena Gomez and ridiculously busy, Mandy and Selena were always there for us," she said. "They sent us emails and checked up on us and made sure we were OK."

The series has been buzzing all over social media since it's release last week. It has already smashed Twitter records reaching 3.4 million Tweets with 200,000 in just one hour alone.

13 Reasons Why is now available to watch on Netflix.
