Jucilene Marinho, a 23-year-old Brazilian girl, became the first woman to undergo reconstructive vagina surgery using tilapia skin, a procedure created by an innovative group of researchers at the Federal University of Ceara.
As reported by the New York Post online site, the surgery, which was performed in April 2017, would have allowed Marinho to overcome a congenital disorder that caused her to be born without vaginal walls. Scientifically known as Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH), this condition only affects 1 in 5,000 women.
When she was 15 years old, Jucilene's life completely collapsed when specialists assured her that the only thing her reproductive organ needed was the vaginal walls, which would prevent her from having sex.
I cried a lot when I found out … I thought my world was over. I always dreamed of having a baby and I had to accept that it would not be possible,”said the young university student, who after undergoing the procedure and after three months of recovery was able to have intimate relationships for the first time in her life.
"At first I was scared because I thought it would hurt or hurt [the surgery]. But it was a wonderful moment because everything turned out perfect. There was no pain, only pleasure and satisfaction, "she added.
The Brazilian specialists who carried out the procedure began using tilapia skin in 2015 to help burn patients. The skin of this particular freshwater fish is credited with being rich in collagen, resistant to certain diseases, and being as strong as human.
