In a story out of a science fiction story, a Hawaii resident was hit by a "lava bomb" emitted by the Kilauea volcano that nearly broke his leg in two and was barely worth living. And now, miraculously, he lives to tell the tale.

Earlier in the week, Darryl Clinton, originally from California, made headlines when the hot magma from the Kilauea volcano wounded him as he watched the phenomenon from his home in the town of Pahoa, approximately 100 yards away.

The cone became active on May 3, causing massive evacuations on the largest island in the archipelago. However, Clinton, who is the father of two teenage daughters, stayed at home and what's more, he even arranged a meeting with friends and family to watch the spectacle of Mother Nature.

It is right there that the burning lava reached him. "It was the most powerful impact I have ever had on life," the survivor told KHON News of from his hospital bed. "[The lava] was really hot, it burned."

Bleeding to death, his leg virtually split in two and his foot almost detached and held by a sheet, the man was loaded into a car and rushed to the Hilo Medical Center. There he was admitted and continues under severe rest instructions for at least six weeks.

"I just wanted to live, I did not care that my leg was cut," he said. Clinton also explained that she plans to return to her home, but that at the moment she doesn't want to know anything more about eruptions, or lava. "Is that really happening? Isn't that a bad dream?”Said a joker.

"There are now two places where lava is flowing and entering the ocean," spokesmen for the Hawaii Observatory said Thursday. The authorities urged all those living in areas near danger zones to stay away and on alert.
